Garbage Disposal Humming but Not Working? Here's How to Fix It

When you flip the switch and your garbage disposal just hums instead of spinning, don't panic — and don't assume it's dead. A hum almost always means the unit has power but the grinding plate is jammed. That's often a fix you can do yourself in a few minutes.
Step 1: Turn off the power
Switch the disposal off at the wall, then unplug it under the sink or flip its breaker. Confirm it's dead before doing anything else.
Step 2: Free the jam from the bottom
Most disposals have a hex (Allen) socket on the underside, in the center. Insert the matching hex wrench — one usually comes with the unit — and work it back and forth several times. You'll feel the jam break loose as the plate turns freely.
Step 3: Hit the reset button
On the bottom of the unit there's a small red reset button. If it has popped out, press it back in. This resets the internal overload protection that trips when the motor jams.
Step 4: Restore power and test
Plug the unit back in (or flip the breaker), run cold water, and switch it on briefly. It should spin freely now. If something hard caused the jam — a bone, a bottle cap, a fruit pit — remove it with tongs, never your fingers.
When it's not just a jam
If the unit still hums after freeing the plate, won't reset, is leaking under the sink, or does nothing at all, it's time for a pro.
